Signs & Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, which is most often referred to as gum disease, is a condition that affects the health of the gum tissue in and around your teeth. It is most often caused by poor oral hygiene and dietary habits. The disease is defined as an infection of the gums that causes pockets to form and develop around the teeth. The gums continue to separate from the teeth, creating deeper pockets that allow for bacterial growth.

What are the Signs & Symptoms of Periodontal Disease?

There are several signs and symptoms to look for if you suspect that you might have gum disease. Oftentimes, gum disease begins to show mild symptoms and signs before getting worse. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Bleeding of the gums
  • Gum inflammation, pain and redness
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Loose, unstable teeth
  • Pus between teeth and around gums
  • Gum recession

How is Gum Disease treated?

Gum disease can be treated in a variety of different ways. Treatment is often specific to the individual as well as the level and type of gum disease involved. Treatment can include laser therapy, scaling and root planing cleanings, pocket reduction surgery and at-home care. Treating gum disease is an on-going process and even after treatment, the disease can return if you fail to care for your oral health properly.

What can you do to stop the progression of Gum Disease?

There are a few different things that you can do to prevent gum disease from developing. First and foremost, you need to brush and floss your teeth regularly using high-quality products. Ideally, you should be switching from a manual toothbrush to an electric one, as it’s better at eliminating plaque and bacteria each time it’s used. You should be coming into the office every six months for a professional dental cleaning regardless of how well you take care of your teeth at home. Periodontal disease treatment is crucial in preventing the condition from getting worse.
