What is Periodontal Disease Maintenance?
Periodontal disease, more commonly referred to as gum disease, is a condition that affects the health of your gums. It develops when plaque, tartar and bacteria cause inflammation and infection to the gums, causing them to separate from the teeth. In turn, this causes pocketing between the gums and the teeth, which are breeding grounds for bacterial growth. Maintenance of periodontal disease is crucial when it comes to treating it, reversing it and preventing it altogether.
Why is Periodontal Disease Maintenance needed?
Periodontal disease maintenance is necessary because it can protect and save your entire smile. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss and can even have an impact on underlying bone. Maintaining gum disease prevents the pocketing from becoming worse, which can eventually lead to the loss of your teeth. There are many treatment options that are specific to maintaining your gum health.
Who is a good candidate for Periodontal Disease Maintenance?
To determine if you have gum disease, we’ll use a small probe to measure the pockets around each tooth. Almost half of all adults over age 30 have gum disease, so it’s incredibly common to have some form of the condition. However, if it’s found that you have the disease, it is important to begin treatment right away and then maintain proper gum and oral health afterwards.
What does Periodontal Disease Maintenance entail?
Maintenance of periodontal disease is often necessary both during treatment and after it’s finished. Gum disease can be reversed, but it can just as easily return if you fail to take good care of your teeth. There are several ways to maintain good oral health and hygiene when you have gum disease. These include:
- Regular professional dental cleanings
- Deep cleanings (periodontal scaling and root planing)
- Proper oral hygiene and care at home
- At-home periodontal treatment
- Oral rinses
- Dental hygiene education
