What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients who suffer fear and anxiety when coming into the dental office. Dental anxiety is incredibly common, and it’s not uncommon for patients to forgo treatment because of this fear. We offer many different types of sedation options to help you relax during your visit with us. We can consult with you to determine which sedative is right for you.
Why is Sedation Dentistry needed?
Sedation is safe and can be administered to patients of all ages. Because we offer a few different types of sedatives, you can choose what works best for your own personal needs. Some of the reasons you’d want to consider sedation dentistry include:
- You continually forgo dental treatment due to fear
- You feel extreme fear and anxiety when in the dental chair
- You suffer panic attacks during your appointments
- You have trouble sitting still for procedures
- You don’t like the smells and sounds associated with dental procedures
Who is a good candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
Most patients of varying ages are good candidates for sedation dentistry. We offer three different types of sedation to fit your needs. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is useful for relaxing you before and during the appointment. Oral sedation is a pill that is taken prior to your appointment to relax you while the work is done.
What can you expect during Sedation Dentistry?
We first consult with you about the sedative you’d like to utilize during your appointment. For most sedative options, we inform our patients that they will need a friend or relative to bring them home after the appointment. You may not be able to fully drive a vehicle when coming out of the effects of the sedative. Sedation can be used on both adult and children alike. You will be given the sedative of your choice and be taken to our recovery room, where you’ll be given time to wake up before going home.
