What are Composite Fillings?
A composite filling is a restoration that is used to replace areas of a tooth that have decayed. If you have a cavity, we can remove the decay from the area and put a filling in its place. Composite resin fillings are made out a tooth-colored plastic that is durable and resilient. We match the color of the fillings to your teeth before they are placed, which ensures a beautiful and flawless finish.
Why would Composite Fillings be needed?
The most common reason for needing a composite filling is because you have a cavity. We can check for cavities at each of your bi-annual dental appointments. It is best to have cavities filled sooner rather than later because this prevents the decay from getting worse. Some of our patients come to us because they want to have older amalgam (metal) fillings removed and replaced with tooth-colored composite fillings instead.
Who is a good candidate for Composite Fillings?
To determine if you might need a composite filling, we’ll perform an exam to check for cavities. The exam takes just minutes and gives us an idea of where and if you have any signs of tooth decay. It’s not uncommon for patients to have several cavities at the same time, especially if they haven’t been to the dentist in awhile. In this case, we can place several fillings at the same time if they’re in the same area of the mouth.
What happens during the procedure for Composite Fillings?
The procedure begins with a local anesthetic that is injected to numb the area that will be receiving the filling. The decay or old filling material is removed and the small hole is prepped for the composite material. We shade match the material so that it blends in well with the rest of the tooth. The composite is then placed in the tooth and smoothed out carefully so that there is no excess. The composite resin is cured with a bright light several times before it is hardened enough to where it will not move or fall out. Your new filling can last for years without any special care or treatment.
